GROWING UP IN AFRICA
Growing up in Africa, which is widely known as a developing continent there is still the need for us to change our mentality. We face challenges such as food insecurity, political instability, poor technology, and high rates of unemployment. As youth, we saw the need for giving motivation and acting as role models by creating employment, promoting zero hunger, reducing poverty, promoting agricultural markets, and reducing crime rates among the youths.
First and foremost,
the creation of employment has been our major aim as young people in Africa.
This is because before we joined campus we faced unemployment and this
motivated us to be job creators rather than job seekers. We started small
business initiation which we employed a few youths in the society. We had a
small grocery store that supplied the neighborhood with various vegetables and
fruits and in this small business, we employed at least two people. Their role
was to supply the groceries. We also promoted other upcoming businesses such as
the traveling industries by hiring Boda body men.
In our communities,
we are faced with the issue of food insecurity. This is led by uneventful
change of climate such as prolonged drought since the agriculture in our
communities solely depends on rainfall. Once we have insufficient rainfall the
plants die hence low food productivity and in our country, we depend on
agriculture as the source of living. The small business imitative where were
the core founders, promoted zero hunger through the creation of jobs, provision
of groceries at a lower food at a lower cost so that most people could afford
them, and visiting the orphanages, elderly, and prisons.
In addition
to that, we have taken part in reducing poverty. Creating jobs for the few
people we did meant we had created a source of reliable income. Also through the
creation of employment, we promoted social peace and stability which reduced
crime rates in the societies. Peace attracted potential investors who would
invest in our community hence creating a wide scope of employment. We also
acted as an example to most youths who opened to the idea of entrepreneurs
rather than waiting for rare jobs.
In
conclusion, small businesses opened our eyes that we can do more for our society. It’s just the mindset and having the capital to establish
a bigger business. The experience of being managers of the small groceries
business has revealed that we can be change-makers for our society.
