There are several reasons why teenagers (people aged between 13 and 19 years) engage in drug abuse such as   cocaine, heroin, bhang, hat(miraa) among others. These reasons include the peer influence, to forget their problems and relax, to having the urge to be independence and curiosity and experimentation taking the biggest part.

Teenagers experience changes that is physically, mentally and emotionally. Naturally making this period in life a period of experimentation. They discover more about themselves and the world around them. They try to figure out their identity and future career and find their respective place in the world. Teenagers have a youthful exuberance for adventure and new experiences. Due to this excitement to indulge in the unknown craving and constantly seeking out new experiences, fun and adventure plus experimentation with substances leads several consequences.

Drugs abuse can cause or mask emotional problems such as anxiety, depression, mood swings, suicidal thoughts and even schizophrenia. In fact, among teens with depression, about 1/3 report using drugs. Unfortunately, drug use can increase the severity of these emotional problems, inevitably leading to dependency. Some side effects of substance abuse/ experimentation are emotional problems, behavior problems, addiction/ dependency, risky sexual activity, brain damage, disease, car accidents or even death.
